As a marriage celebrant I get the chance to deal with
all types of stress and how people deal with it.
It is a funny thing stress.
Too much stress in one person is too little in
another. If
a potential husband is too relaxed the bride to be could
be on the verge of what I call ‘a major nervy’.
I can generally put my clients into three
categories, 1, 2 and 3.
People in category 1 are obsessive stressors.
Flowers cause hair to be pulled out, decorations
are a headache, the dress a nail nibbler, the guest list
can become almost an all in brawl.
Every little thing has to be taken on only by
themselves and even once these things are sorted out
they still need to be fretted over.
Being a category 1 person is certainly not a bad
thing. In
fact category 1 people’s weddings can be a great big,
perfectly executed ceremonies and reception that people
never forget.
There is a huge amount of stress in getting it
ready but little on the big day.
People in category 2 are non-stressors, very casual.
The French definition is ‘lassaire-faire’, very
relaxed, ‘she’ll be right’ kind of people.
Whilst there is no stress in the preparations,
there can be a catastrophe when the ceremony is under-organised.
Category 2 people’s weddings are great but I am
always cautious that the wedding rings are sitting on
the side table at the motel.
Finally there is category 3.
Category 3 is people who recognise their stress.
These people have a plan, they ask questions, and
they get help and use the resources at hand.
Category 3 might even seek out the help of a
wedding planner.
Category 3 weddings have there fair amount of
stress but is manageable.
Which do I prefer???
I don’t prefer any.
In my opinion a wedding needs all three.
You need to be responsible but not obsessive, you
need to be relaxed but not lazy but above all you need
to recognise that you are not alone.
