When I meet with couples for the first time and we have gone through ideas for ceremonies and networking in relation to the ultimate ceremony of their dream I always state to them what paperwork they must give me as an original, a certified copy but I cannot accept anything that is faxed or just a plain photocopy as this is considered not a legal document.

The bride and groom are usually very excited when they come and met me announcing to the world that they are getting married.  It is often the biggest event in a couple’s life and the most difficult part that stresses couples out is where to start and where to put everything, especially prioritising as to what is very important and what is not.

I have had many couples come to visit me that have had not a clue but within a couple hours they have got everything organised and their minds are now inundated with more information and ideas than they can possibly conjure. – I am certainly a great little networker as I am sure most celebrants are.  I have got lots of tricks up my sleeve as I have often stated before with a great planning process very little can go wrong.

I would like to re-iterate the requirements of the production of birth certificates Section 42 Marriage Act 1961.

1.   Subject to this Section a Marriage shall not be solemnised unless

(b) There has been produced to that authorised celebrant in respect of each of the parties (i) an official certificate, or an official extract of an entry in an official register, showing the date and place of birth of the party.

It goes on to talk about stat decs:-

Important -  Statutory Declarations in respect of births cannot be taken in respect of people born in Australia and you CANNOT accept an Australian passport under any circumstances.

In NSW birth certificates are available to those persons whose name appears on the certificate, their parents or an authorised representative.

If you are the person named on the certificate or the parent then you are required to provide at least 3 forms of identification with your application.  This can range from Drivers Licence, Passport or Firearms Licence to a Medicare card/credit cards or bank statement showing your current name and address details.

If you are classified as an authorised representative then you must satisfy one the following:

  1. Provide written authority AND identification from the person named on the certificate or one of their parents, plus your own identification.

  2. Show Power of Attorney relating to the person named on the certificate or one of their parents.

  3. Be a solicitor/welfare group acting for the person named on the certificate.

  4. Be a legally appointed guardian of the person named on the certificate.
