Betty and Trevor came to visit me from Jindera. I loved them instantly.
They were such down-to-earth people. They didn't want a
fuss and bother, just wanted to get married with their
kids.
So, Betty's boys came from Lightning Ridge, her daughter came from
Bendigo, and other kids from Melbourne. It was a bit of
a motley crew, and especially to synchronise them to all
be at Betty's on the same day, considering that they
wanted it to be a surprise.
I might add that Betty and Trevor had been together for 8 or 9 years, and
the family loved them both very much. The day eventually
came and it was very wet. Trevor was resplendently
dressed in his not-quite-new suit, and Betty looked
terrific in her blue dress. I remember her saying to me
'I don't wear dresses' so this was a very special event!
I walked around the back of the house, and said 'the doer is here now, so
we can get on with the ceremony!' Betty was actually
quite nervous, and kept going inside to check that the
scalloped potatoes weren't burning. We had to get all of
the rubbish off the table and clear the decks for the
ceremony because I really wanted it to be perfect.
So they sprinkled love hearts on the table and chucked the kids' toys and
a few beer bottles away where they couldn't be seen.
They had forgotten to choose music, so I sang 'Here
Comes The Bride' and the guests harmonised as best they
could! Gorgeous Betty and Trevor spoke their vows.
"Today Betty I join my life with yours, as your husband and best friend.
I promise to be faithful to you, to respect you, and to
grow with you through the years."
As Betty put the ring on Trevor's finger, she said "Trevor I give you
this ring as a symbol of my love forever for you."
As I walked out the front gate I thought, what a wonderful, loving group
of people. I don't know how much shenanigans they got up
to that night, as they were heading off bright and early
in the morning for a 6-month trip around Australia in a
caravan. Good luck to them!
Regards,
Annie.
