I have officiated hundreds of weddings over the last 5-6
years and
it is just mind boggling how every couple you met are
completely individual and unique with their own ideas
and their own way of thinking and doing things.
And so often you met couples and particularly the
bride may be stressed and I always say ‘do not stress
over the little things’.
There are two ways to reduce stress, relaxation
activities and stress management.
Stress management is what you do when you are
stressed.
Relaxation activities are planned or unplanned events
that you do whilst you are not stressed.
Relaxation activities fall under three categories,
active, passive and earned.
In the build up to your wedding it is important
to specify planned and unplanned relaxation events.
By consciously setting time aside you are
mentally preparing yourself to slow down and enjoy the
experience.
Active relaxation activities can take the form of
dancing, skiing, gardening, swimming, romantic walks.
Passive relaxation would include going to the movies,
watching a DVD, reading, listening to music or as simple
as sitting and patting the cat/dog.
Earned relaxation would be self-hypnosis, tai chi, yoga,
reflexology, hydrotherapy or massage.
Either way you need to make a commitment to do these.
The most common cause of poor stress management
is trying to control events and people that are beyond
your control.
Many people get into the habit of blaming others
for their own predicaments which in turn fuels their
stress because other people’s behaviour will always be
out of your control.
Essentially this is handing over responsibility for
happiness to others; a situation you can never win.
The only real way to effectively manage stress is
to feel the need for control over events and people
internally.
That is don’t go looking for blame but rather look for
solutions.
There is a big difference between worrying about
something and thinking about it.
Worrying is a negative self-indulgent state
whereas thinking about it, looking for solutions will
give you a better feeling about your circumstances.
You need to devise an action plan to convert your
worries into solutions.
Sweating on it won’t make you feel better,
spending your energy on finding solutions will.
Just say you are worried sick that your wedding cake
will collapse.
You need to look for alternative solutions before
deciding on the best plan; there is usually 5 solutions
to every problem.
Build a solid support network around you and be
prepared to seek advice and counsel from others in the
know.
·
Speak to cake maker about it - what recipe to use?
How many layers?
·
Hire a bodyguard
·
Don’t have a cake
·
Have individual cupcakes
·
Have two cakes, one for show and one for eating.
Throwing around ideas can make a tremendous difference
to the solution process.
Some of these suggestions may not be entirely
relative but add a lot of fun to the exercise and often
take the edge off your stress.
